The Margery Blackman: Weaving, Life exhibition opened at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in May with a weekend of special activities presented in collaboration with CTANZ, honouring her long association with this organisation. This extensive survey of Margery’s weaving practice and textile scholarship over several decades included examples of work published in Context and other journals. For the final weekend, the gallery has organised a couple of final opportunities for engagement. You can follow the thread of Margery’s career with a floor talk by co-curator Elle Loui August on Saturday 12 October at 11am. After that, there’s the hands-on open demonstration of weaving led by the LoomRoom’s Christine Keller from 12-2pm.

Another exhibition closing soon, this one at the Dowse, will also wind down with allied events. Yvonne Todd: Brides is a series staging distinctive wedding dresses against elaborate backdrops in a way that”infuses the conventional bridal portrait with her signature elixir of eeriness and elegance”. The Dowse is hosting a talk on Sunday 13 October at 1pm by Te Papa senior curator (and new CTANZ president) Claire Regnault. Nice day for a white wedding runs through the history of the wedding dress from Queen Victoria to Vinka Lucas, with a few diversions along the way. Could be a nice day for those from greater Wellington to enjoy a bit of culture and context, and to catch the exhibition before it closes on 20 October.

Definitely last-but-not-least, there’s a big fashion day out in Auckland on Saturday 12 October, with Hui Auaha o Aotearoa – Open Day at the Fashion Museum. It’s the local contribution to the Global Fashioning Assembly 2024, the second month-long international ‘gathering of global fashion makers that reaches across disciplines and geographical boundaries to recognise how diverse fashion is’. The NZFM is moving offline for the day to offer a run of hands-on activities and workshops – emergency repairs, research, styling, and thinking – at the Auckland Central Library, 10am-4pm. If this is short notice (apologies) or you’re not in Auckland, the Global Fashioning Assembly has an online presence which posts content from the many events that make up this biennial online gathering of local fashion coalitions from around the world to de-centre and decolonise knowledge creation and share on body fashioning practices and heritages. New Zealand’s event will be online from 19 October.
