The Call for Papers for next year’s CTANZ symposium is now live.
Symposium 2025 Call for papers
Whenever possible, we swing our symposium between islands and so from the north in 2024, it’s back to Ōtepoti Dunedin in early May 2025. The symposium proper will take place at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 May, with a symposium event on Friday night. This will follow a Thursday night event ahead of finding out how the CTANZ community has responded to this year’s theme (cue drumroll), Fascination.
Fascination celebrates textiles and dress for those that are charmed by them, who create them, collect, curate and crave them.
We are inspired by the various ways textiles and dress compel and fascinate across time and place, their inherent glamour, in its old sense of charm and mystery and its more modern senses of fantasy and allure. Join us in exploring what ignites your passion, from everyday collecting that brings out the magpie in you, to charismatic textiles, dress that sparkles, or an item or collection that stops you in your tracks, fascinates, compels or repels you.
Fascination will be held at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum in Ōtepoti Dunedin, in conjunction with an exhibition of the Eden Hore Collection, curated by longtime CTANZ member Dr Jane Malthus. Eden Hore (1919-1997) was a Naseby farmer who succumbed to the allure of what he called ‘exotic and high fashion’ in the 1970s and became an avid collector and promoter of New Zealand made high fashion.
Although Friday and Saturday will be full of symposium, if you’re the kind of person interested in a costume and textile event, you’ll possibly also be interested that Dunedin Public Art Gallery has just announced a Nom*D exhibition to run 29 March – 6 July 2025; also at DPAG from February, its ‘big wall’ will be Mataaho Collective’s latest installation, while at Tūhura Otago Museum, the Jane Dodd exhibition will still be on display.
